Bob Probert Autograph photo

We just heard that legendary enforcer Bob Probert passed away today at age 45. In a brief statement provided by a Probert family spokesman, it was stated that Probert was on his boat Lake St. Clair with his family, including his children and in-laws, when he began experiencing serious chest pains. By the time they reached Windsor Regional Hospital, Probert was absent of vital signs. An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.

In 16 NHL seasons, Probert earned 3,300 penalty minutes (fourth on the NHL’s all-time list) in 935 regular season games and participated in 233 hockey fights. He accumulated over 40 points with his first season with the Blackhawks but from then on, his points production and penalty minutes gradually decreased.

During the remainder of this time with the blackhawks While he never reached the levels of point production that he achieved while with the Detroit Red Wings however he remained a dominant physical force on the ice and continued to battle many long-term rivalries with other enforcers like Tie Domi (see high light video below). Probert saw it as his job to protect his teammates.

After the 2001–02 season, Probert was placed on waivers by Chicago. No other team picked him up so he was advised that his role with the Blackhawks would be limited, or even relegated to playing in the minor leagues again. On November 16, 2002, Probert opted to “unofficially” retire so that he could join the Blackhawks radio broadcasting team. during the 2002/03 off season, Probert officially announced his retirement.

Probert will always remain in NHL history as one of the dominant team enforcers.

Marian Hossa finally won the Stanley Cup after a third straight attempt. The 2010 Stanley Cup finals was actually the third time that he had come this close to winning the Cup, and this time he succeeded. In 2008, he played with the Pittsburgh Penguins whom lost to the Detroit Red Wings, and then the next year with the Detroit Red Wings who lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Six Chicago Blackhawk players have been chosen to represent their countries at the 2010 Winter Olympics that will occur in Vancouver, Canada in February.

Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, and Brent Seabrook were all part of the twenty three men 2010 Canadian Olympic roster announced by Steve Yzerman yesterday. Patrick Kane was the lone Chicago player included on the Team USA roster announced by Brian Burke at the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park and both Marian Hossa and Tomas Kopecky were named to be part of the Slovakian Olympic team.

All but one of the six players will be making their first Olympic appearance. This will be the third Olympics appearance for Hossa. The 30-year old forward registered six points in Salt Lake City in 2002, and 10 points during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. However despite lack of Olympic experience, all of the players have had pretty extensive international hockey experience. Kane was part of the USA gold medal team at the 2006 World Under-18 Championships where he also finished as the tournament’s leading scorer. He also skated for the U.S. at the 2007 World Junior Championships, and at the 2008 IIHF World Championships.

Toews has won four gold medals with Team Canada at various international levels, including the 2008 World Junior Championships. Duncan Keith helped Canada win a silver medal at the Worlds in 2008.

Hossa has also represented Slovakia in numerous World Junior Championships, World Championships, and the 2004 World Cup in his international career. The 21st Winter Olympiad will be Tomas Kopecky’s first opportunity to represent his country in international play.

Antti Niemi, a rookie goaltender from Finland who signed as a free agent in May of 2008, is off to a hot start this season with a 6-1-1 record and three shutouts in seven starts. He is currently playing as the backup for Cristobal Huet, but while he is playing this hot it is more likely that he will see more ice time.

On Thursday the Chicago Blackhawks reported that they managed to sign their two corner stone forwards and star defenceman with contract extentions. Forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane (both 21 years old) aggreed to five-year contracts worth about $6.3 million (US) per season, and Duncan Keith (26 years old) signed a 13-year deal worth $72 million (USd).

The signing of these contract extentions help ensure the Blackhawks fans are going to have a team worth cheering for the next decade, or more. The down side is that Chicago has a large number of players who will have cap hits over US$3-million next season incuding Hossa, Sharp, Kane, Bolland, Versteeg, Byfuglien, Keith, Huet, Campbell and Seabrook. So after this season, the Hawks will need to rid themselves of a few big-ticket players.

Denis Savard was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round, 3rd pick overall, in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. At the time he was the highest drafted Blackhawks player in NHL history, until Patrick Kane

was drafted in 2007 (Kane was the first pick overall that season). Savard had three assists in his first game and then went ahead to set the Blackhawks’ record (since broken) for most points by a rookie with 75 points.

Savard is probably best was known for his signature trademark move, the ‘Spin-o-rama’, which entailed Savard whirling around with the puck in a full rotation allowing him to defeat defenders and goaltenders alike. Savard played with the Blackhawks at two different occasions during his career. The first stint was from 1980 to 1990 season. The second one was from 1994 to 1997 (He played for the Montreal Canadiens and the Tampa Bay Lightning in between playing for the Hawks).

The Chicago Blackhawks retired the fifth jersey in Hawks history on March 19, 1998, when Denis Savard’s familiar No. 18 sweater was raised to the rafters.

He has also served as head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks and currently serves as an ambassador for the Blackhawks’ organization.
In 2000 Denis Savard was elected into the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame. He has two rookie hockey cards, one with the Opee Chee set and the other with the Topps card set. The 1981-82 O-Pee-Chee #63 Denis Savard RC has a high book value of $30 and a low book value of $15.
