Third time is a charm for Hossa

Marian Hossa finally won the Stanley Cup after a third straight attempt. The 2010 Stanley Cup finals was actually the third time that he had come this close to winning the Cup, and this time he succeeded. In 2008, he played with the Pittsburgh Penguins whom lost to the Detroit Red Wings, and then the next year with the Detroit Red Wings who lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Toews joins Triple Gold Club

After hoisting the Stanley Cup this month, 22 year old Conn Smythe winner Jonathan Toews became the youngest and latest member of the Triple Gold Club. Along with winning the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks, he also won gold at the 2007 IIHF World Championship in Moscow, and Olympic gold medal at the 2010 winter Olympics in Vancouver earlier this year in February.

The Triple Gold Club is a special club reserved for the hockey players that have won an Olympic gold medal, a World Championship gold medal, and the Stanley Cup.

“More than 15,000 players have tried to win Worlds gold since 1930, more than 9,000 players have tried to win the Stanley Cup since 1893, more than 4,000 players have tried to win Olympic gold since 1920. But only 24 players have won all three. The Triple Gold Club is Hockey’s most distinguished membership.” – IIHF

The current Triple Gold Club Members basically come from four nations: Sweden (9), Canada (7), Russia (6) and the Czech Republic (2). The players include Tomas Jonsson, Mats Naslund, Hakan Loob, Valeri Kamensky, Alexei Gusarov, Peter Forsberg,Vyacheslav Fetisov, Igor Larionov, Alexander Mogilny, Vladimir Malakhov, Rob Blake, Joe Sakic, Brendan Shanahan, Scott Niedermayer, Jaromir Jagr, Jiri Slegr, Nicklas Lidstrom, Fredrik Modin, Chris Pronger, Niklas Kronwall, Henrik Zetterberg, Mikael Samuelsson, Eric Staal, Jonathan Toews, and Mike Babcock

2010 Olympic Team Rosters

Six Chicago Blackhawk players have been chosen to represent their countries at the 2010 Winter Olympics that will occur in Vancouver, Canada in February.

Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, and Brent Seabrook were all part of the twenty three men 2010 Canadian Olympic roster announced by Steve Yzerman yesterday. Patrick Kane was the lone Chicago player included on the Team USA roster announced by Brian Burke at the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park and both Marian Hossa and Tomas Kopecky were named to be part of the Slovakian Olympic team.

All but one of the six players will be making their first Olympic appearance. This will be the third Olympics appearance for Hossa. The 30-year old forward registered six points in Salt Lake City in 2002, and 10 points during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. However despite lack of Olympic experience, all of the players have had pretty extensive international hockey experience. Kane was part of the USA gold medal team at the 2006 World Under-18 Championships where he also finished as the tournament’s leading scorer. He also skated for the U.S. at the 2007 World Junior Championships, and at the 2008 IIHF World Championships.

Toews has won four gold medals with Team Canada at various international levels, including the 2008 World Junior Championships. Duncan Keith helped Canada win a silver medal at the Worlds in 2008.

Hossa has also represented Slovakia in numerous World Junior Championships, World Championships, and the 2004 World Cup in his international career. The 21st Winter Olympiad will be Tomas Kopecky’s first opportunity to represent his country in international play.

Niemi gets third shutout in seven starts

Antti Niemi, a rookie goaltender from Finland who signed as a free agent in May of 2008, is off to a hot start this season with a 6-1-1 record and three shutouts in seven starts. He is currently playing as the backup for Cristobal Huet, but while he is playing this hot it is more likely that he will see more ice time.

Niemi made 18 saves to get his third shutout in seven starts this season as Chicago beat Tampa Bay 4-0 on Sunday night. The rookie netminder who has made eight appearances this season with three starts since November 7th. In that time he has allowed just one goal, stopped 80 shotsand and recorded two shutouts in those games. Antti also had a shutout in his first game this season against the Florida Panthers on October third.

Toews, Kane & Keith sign multi year contract extentions

On Thursday the Chicago Blackhawks reported that they managed to sign their two corner stone forwards and star defenceman with contract extentions. Forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane (both 21 years old) aggreed to five-year contracts worth about $6.3 million (US) per season, and Duncan Keith (26 years old) signed a 13-year deal worth $72 million (USd).

The signing of these contract extentions help ensure the Blackhawks fans are going to have a team worth cheering for the next decade, or more. The down side is that Chicago has a large number of players who will have cap hits over US$3-million next season incuding Hossa, Sharp, Kane, Bolland, Versteeg, Byfuglien, Keith, Huet, Campbell and Seabrook. So after this season, the Hawks will need to rid themselves of a few big-ticket players.

Chicago picks 28th at 2009 NHL entry draft

The Hawks selected defenseman Dylan Olsen with the 28th overall selection of the 2009 NHL entry draft. Olsen had 10 goals, 19 assists and 123 penalty minutes in 53 games with Camrose of the Alberta Junior Hockey League last season. Patrick Kane had his first hat trick and Jonathan Toews scored the go-ahead goal in a wild third period Monday night as Chicago advanced to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 1995 by beating the Vancouver Canucks 7-5.

Chicago Black Hawks Retired Numbers

Just like many other NHL teams, a franchise will often retire a jersey number of a past player as part of respect to what that player has done for it’s team while it was part of it. The team will usually create commemorative banners featuring the players number and hang them at the teams home arena. Also out of respect another player will not use that number while playing with the team. Chicago is no different and has retired several numbers, the Chicago Black Hawks have Retired the following numbers:

The first number that the Chicago Blackhawks retired was of Stan Mikita, his number 21 banner was celebrated on October 19, 1980. Mikita played all of his entire 22 year career with the Chicago Blackhawks, amassing a remarkable 541 goals, and 1,467 points. In just his second full season with the Blackhawks, he led the team in scoring throughout the playoffs and helped Chicago win the Stanley Cup in 1961.

Bobby Hull’s number 9 was the second one that the Blackhawk’s retired and raised to the rafters (on December 18, 1983). Hull is not only the greatest left wing in Chicago Blackhawk history, but he is arguably the best left wing in National Hockey League history. In, 1966, he became the first player in NHL history, to score more than 50 goals in one season and he reached the 50 or more goal plateau five times in his career. The “Golden Jet” has won the Art Ross Trophy three times, the Hart Trophy (MVP) twice and also the Lady Byng (Sportsmanship) trophy.

On November 20, 1988, the Chicago Blackhawks retired Tony Esposito’s No. 35 along with Glenn Hall’s No. 1, in a ceremony honoring two of the greatest goalies in Blackhawk history. Esposito broke into the NHL during the 1968-69 season with the Montreal Canadiens. He appeared in 13 games with a 5-4-4 record and a 2.73 GAA. Hall set a record for endurance that may never be broken in the National Hockey League. He played 503 consecutive games as a goaltender and all without wearing a face mask.

The Chicago Blackhawks retired the fifth jersey in team history on March 19, 1998, when Denis Savard’s familiar No. 18 sweater was raised to the rafters. Savard ranks fourth on the Blackhawks’ all-time goals scored list with 377 and ranks second on the Hawks’ all-time assist list with 719. Savard joins the likes of Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Glenn Hall and Tony Esposito as the only Blackhawks to have their number retired and to be selected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
